PhD seminar
The PhD Colloquium of the Department of Applied Social Sciences is a programme aimed at academic staff members at the Department who are working on doctoral projects, as well as doctoral candidates who are affiliated with the Department either personally or through their institution. It provides guidance and support for doctoral projects from the initial stages right through to the completion of the dissertation and the oral defence or rigorous examination. This also includes the discussion of research proposals, such as those required for admission as a doctoral candidate or as part of a doctoral scholarship, and of drafts of individual chapters of dissertations.
This is achieved through discussions with prospective doctoral candidates (PhD advisory service), regular opportunities for one-to-one meetings and joint colloquium sessions during the lecture period, as well as an additional block weekend at the end of each lecture period. In addition to the usual (academic) questions and issues relating to content and methodology, this service also covers enquiries regarding financial support options (scholarships) and the identification of universities and academic staff eligible to supervise candidates for a doctorate – in other words, the initiation of a cooperative doctorate.
