Project-based study
At the university, students develop projects, put them into practice or take part in real-world projects.
Here are a few examples:
Mindfulness and meditation in a higher education context
As part of an educational and research partnership with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich, the initiative ‘Mindfulness and Meditation in Higher Education – The Munich Model’ was launched, and relevant courses were incorporated into the curricula of various degree programmes.

BALU and YOU
“BALU and DU” is a project in which students (BALU) support a primary school child (MOGLI) for one school year. Twice a week, students organise leisure activities with the child that are tailored to their needs and stage of development, thereby playing a supportive role in the child’s everyday life. These experiences are reflected upon and documented in an accompanying course. Hochschule München, Department of Applied Social Sciences, collaborates on this project with the ‘BALU und DU’ Foundation.

COIL – Collaborative Online International Learning
Collaborative International Online Learning (COIL)
COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) is an innovative teaching concept that offers valuable international learning experiences and, in some cases, also fosters interdisciplinary links. Students from different countries work together on projects, develop their intercultural skills and gain valuable experience in international teamwork – essential key competences that enhance students’ employability.
Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL)
A COIL is offered every year

Students carry out cultural education projects (film, theatre, photography, etc.) in collaboration with various primary and secondary schools in Munich. No prior knowledge of film-making is required; this will be taught at the events.

Social X Factor
At the end of the summer semester each year, around 100–150 students from various departments come together for this special Real Project to work on a social challenge in interdisciplinary teams as part of an intensive seminar. In just one week, they develop innovative ideas and working prototypes. This summer semester’s theme was SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT, including the following areas: urban mobility and the circular economy.
