Global Sessions 2025: Youth under pressure – Promoting health and well-being in an age of multiple crises
This year’s Global Sessions, themed ‘Youth under pressure – Promoting health and well-being in an age of multiple crises’, took place in Vitoria/Gasteiz (Spain, Basque Country) from 19 May to 23 May 2025.
The Global Sessions have been held as an annual event since 2016 and continue the tradition of international networking. Students and teachers discuss the current challenges facing societies worldwide in the fields of social work and healthcare.
Students and teachers from the Basque Country, Finland, Germany, India, Kenya, Sweden and Switzerland discussed a range of different topics relating to education, mental health, migration and climate change.
One of the highlights of these days was the visit to the cancer centre in Álava, Spain (Asociación Española Contra el Cáncer).
The students gained an insight into this non-profit organisation, which offers a range of services such as information about cancer – including prevention initiatives – psychological support, assistance and social care for patients and their families. This also includes very practical measures such as providing patients with wigs or offering courses in stoma care.
These experiences had a direct impact on our students and made them aware of the role they play in people’s health and well-being: adapting to new situations, comparing situations in different contexts, and finding context-specific solutions. Could the importance of the nursing profession be demonstrated any more clearly?
On 22 May 2025, a delegation from Payap University in Chiang Mai (northern Thailand) visited HM! It was an intercultural exchange featuring many inspiring discussions. In future, nursing students will be able to gain an insight into the Thai healthcare system – thereby enriching their profession with international career prospects.
Graduation ceremony for the first cohort of the bachelor's degree in Applied Nursing Science (BAP)
“We practise our profession with integrity, knowledge, courage and respect!” The graduates spoke these words together with Professor Astrid Herold-Majumdar at the end of their graduation ceremony.
Time flew by … On 17 March 2025, after three and a half years, the long-awaited goal was achieved: the students from the first cohort of the bachelor's degree programme in Applied Nursing Science at Hochschule München received their professional registration as registered nurses after successfully passing their exams. And this was celebrated: with the graduates’ families and friends, with the BAP students and the programme team, and of course with a glass of sparkling wine.
The graduates listened with keen interest to the retrospective given by the Head of Degree Programme, Professor Dr Andreas Fraunhofer, which was peppered with a good dose of humour. The Dean of Department 11, Professor Dr Stefan Pohlmann, explained – contrary to the view of Aristotle, who had lost all hope in the future – why, particularly in turbulent times, it is always worth holding on to one’s hope.
In the address given by the Head of Degree Programme, Professor Dr Astrid Herold-Majumdar, those present were able to experience first-hand her enthusiasm for scientific discovery and her dedication to the profession of health and nursing as both a science and an art. The undisputed highlight of the ceremony was the presentation of the ICN Code of Ethics and the collective recitation of the oath: “We practise our profession with integrity, knowledge, courage and respect!”
A moment that will no doubt remain in the memories of the newly qualified nursing staff and all the guests at the graduation ceremony for a long time to come.
