Maker Lab
KU 116
The Maker Lab is a workshop where you can bring your ideas to life and experiment with different materials however you like. We’ve got the tools, the space and the community – all you need to bring is your curiosity.
Think it, Make it, Love it.
Making
The Maker Lab is a laboratory run by and for Department 11 at Hochschule München. It offers students the opportunity to creatively bring their ideas and projects to life using digital and analogue manufacturing technologies.
Facilities
Among other things, the facility offers 3D printers, laser cutters, soldering stations, plotters, a CNC milling machine (Shaper), sewing machines and various tools. The aim is to promote technical skills practically-oriented experience and to create spaces for independent, interdisciplinary work.
by students
For example, students developed materials for social projects, created prototypes as part of seminar projects, or brought their own design ideas to life in 3D models. The focus is on creative engagement with materials, technology and social issues.
Teaching formats and projects in the Maker Lab
The Maker Lab provides a space for creative and practically-oriented courses that actively involve students in the development and design process. The aim is to combine theoretical content with creative, action-oriented methods and to implement innovative learning formats.
Examples from previous semesters include, amongst others:
- Theatre – Design and construction of sets and functional hand puppets
- Creative Making – working freely with digital tools and materials
- Animated film – Development of set designs and models for stop-motion projects
- Escape Room Projects – Design and construction of interactive rooms featuring puzzles, locks and mechanical devices
- Sustainable Practice – Workshops on implementing environmentally conscious projects in a higher education context
These formats promote creative problem-solving, technical skills and collaborative working – all within the department’s socio-educational and educational framework.
Vision for the Future – Green Pasing Campus
The Maker Lab also sees itself as a driving force behind sustainable and community-oriented developments on the Pasing Campus. As part of the ‘Green Campus Pasing’ vision, students are to be more closely involved in the ecological and participatory shaping of their study environment in future.
These include student-led initiatives such as clothing swaps – where clothes are exchanged, repaired or creatively repurposed – as well as the Repair Café, which features, amongst other things, a bicycle repair workshop. Such activities not only promote sustainability, but also foster a sense of community and encourage personal initiative within the university community.
